Change your health insurance group

If you live in Denmark, you can register for health insurance coverage in group 1 or 2.

When you apply for a CPR number, you also receive a yellow health card. As a resident of Copenhagen you are automatically placed in health insurance group 1. But you can switch to group 2 if this better meets your needs.

Facts about changing your healthcare insurance group

You can change your health insurance group once you have been in your current group for more than one year.

The fee for changing health insurance group is DKK 225 (2024).

Your health insurance group will change on the same day that the City of Copenhagen receives your payment.

Your new health insurance card (yellow health card) will arrive in the post within three weeks of changing your health insurance group. Your last name/surname must be on your letter box. If not, PostNord may not deliver your health card. If after four weeks you haven’t heard from us, you are welcome to call us at 33 66 33 66.

You can also use the app ‘Sundhedskortet’ to see your health card.

What is the difference between group 1 and 2?

Group 1 Group 2
Patients must choose and register with a general practitioner (GP)
To see a medical specialist you need a referral from your general practitioner (GP)
To see a physical therapist, podiatrist (chiropodist), or psychologist, you need a referral from a general practioner (GP)
Medical care from a general practitioner or medical specialist is free of charge In part*
Psychologists must have an agreement with the Danish regional healthcare authority in order for you to receive subsidized coverage

* If you are covered in health insurance group 2, you will have to pay the difference, when the price of treatment from a general practitioner (GP) or medical specialist is higher than the subsidy from the region.
