How to change your general practitioner (GP)

This is how you change your general practioner (GP)

  1. Log on to the online self-service solution with your MitID
  2. Search for a new general practitioner or choose the GP you would like (the list only shows GPs that are available to choose)
  3. Pay the fee − changing your doctor costs DKK 225 (2024).

You can freely choose a general practitioner (GP) who is taking new patients, also if the GP is located outside the City of Copenhagen area.

The change will be registered straight away.

Your new health insurance card will arrive in the post within three weeks. Remember to put your name on your letter box. Otherwise PostNord may not deliver the health card to you.

If the GP you would like is not taking new patients

You can register with a general practitioner (GP) who is not taking new patients if you meet at least one of these criteria:

  • Your spouse, cohabitant partner, or someone else in your household is registered with the GP
  • You are turning 15 and the doctor you want is the GP of at least one of your parents
  • You are changing from health group 2 to 1 and the GP is the last doctor you were registered with in group 1
  • Less than two GPs are taking new patients within five kilometres of where you live. The GP who is not taking new patients must accept your choice
  • You would like to register with a GP who is not taking new patients and is located more than five kilometres from your home, and the GP is accepting your choice.

If your general practitioner (GP) is closing office or no longer wants you as a patient

If your GP is moving, closing, or transferring their medical practice, you will automatically be assigned a new doctor. The same applies if your GP no longer wants to have you as a patient.

If you are unhappy with the assigned doctor, you can choose another GP without having to pay the fee. In either case, you must wait to change your GP until you receive a letter from the Capital Region of Denmark (Region Hovedstaden).

How to select a new general practitioner

You will receive a letter with information about your new general practioner (GP) and a new health insurance card (yellow health card) from the Capital Region of Denmark (Region Hovedstaden). The letter will also inform you of the deadline for changing your GP free of charge.

If you want to change your GP, log on to the online self-service solution with your MitID. Select ’Changing, moving, or transfer of medical practice’ as the reason for changing GP.

Changing your general practitioner (GP) when moving

You can always keep your general practioner (GP) when you are moving, also if your GP is not taking new patients or is located far from your new address.

If less than two GPs are available within five kilometres of your new address, you can apply to register with a general practitioner who is not taking new patients. The doctor must accept your choice.

If you would like a GP located more than five kilometres from your home who is not taking new patients, you can apply to register with that GP. The doctor must accept your choice.

You can freely choose a general practioner who is taking new patients. Also when that doctor is not located in the City of Copenhagen.

Changing your doctor when you are moving is free of charge.

Report a change of address and choose a general practitioner (GP)

Fee for changing your general practitioner (GP)

The fee for changing your general practitioner (GP) is normally DKK 225 (2024)

In the following situations it is free of charge:

  • If you choose a new GP when reporting a change of address
  • If your general practitioner is closing their medical practice
  • For children younger than 15 since usually they automatically get their mother’s GP
  • When you turn 15. Changing your GP is free of charge in the month you turn 15 and in the month following. You will need a MitID to change your doctor
  • If as parents you have joint custody and live together at the same address, but each have your own general practitioner (GP), you can decide which of your GPs you want your child to be registered with.

Delivery of your new health insurance card

Your new health insurance card will be delivered by post within three weeks of changing your GP.

PostNord may only deliver the health card if your name is on the letter box. If you have ordered a health insurance card for your child, the child’s name must also be on the letter box.

If you haven’t received your health insurance card

Your new health insurance card will usually arrive in the post within three weeks of ordering it. If you haven’t received your card, it may be because your name is not on your letter box in which case PostNord is not permitted to deliver it. If that is the case, you will receive a letter from the Danish National Register (Folkeregistret) telling you how to get your card. If more than four weeks have passed without hearing from us, you are welcome to call us at 33 66 33 66.
