Here's how you get and renew a Danish driving licence, and how you can use your licence abroad.

Getting a Danish driving licence

If you do not already have a foreign driving licence that you can use or exchange for a Danish one, you can get a Danish driving licence at a driving school.

There are many driving schools in Copenhagen where you can obtain a driving licence. A course consists of

  • driving theory lessons and a theory test you must pass
  • driving lessons and a driving test you must pass.

Your driving licence for category A and B will be valid for 15 years.
Category C and D and a commercial licence will be valid for 5 years.
Your driving license may be valid for a shorter time than normal, eg due to health issues.

Validity of driving licences

Ordinary car, motorcycle and large moped:

  • 15 years.

Truck and bus:

  • 5 years.

Validity period for truck and bus if you are 70 years or older:

  • 70 years: 4 years
  • 71 years: 3 years
  • 72-79 years: 2 years
  • 80 years or more: 1 year

Your driving license may be valid for a shorter time than normal, eg due to health issues.

Delivery of your new driving licence

Usually you get your new licence in the mail within two weeks.

If you renew your licence due to age or a medical condition, and there are any remarks in the medical certificate, it can take more than two weeks as the police needs to approve your application.

Driving abroad

Your Danish driving licence is valid in the EU, Switzerland, Iceland, Norway and Liechtenstein. If you need to drive in other countries, you may need an international driving licence. Please contact the embassy of the individual country to find out about the rules.

  • The international driving licence is a translation of your Danish driving licence.
  • You need to bring your Danish and international driving licence when you drive.
  • The international driving licence is valid for one year.

If you need to drive in different countries outside the EU, Switzerland, Iceland, Norway and Liechtenstein, you may need several international driving licences.
