MitID

MitID is replacing NemID in a transitional period running until 31 October 2022. We recommend that you get MitID as soon as possible.

Why is MitID replacing NemID?

Digital solutions are replaced by new ones over time for security reasons. MitID is using the latest standards for security to ensure that we are safe online.

Do I have to get MitID?

If you have NemID and want to continue to be able to log on to digital services, you must have MitID before 31 October 2022.

It is optional if you want MitID, just like NemID.

Can I get MitID?

You can have MitID if your identity can be established with certainty when you want to get one and if you are capable of handling the MitID on your own. You are not allowed to share your MitID with anyone else.

When should I get MitID?

We recommend that you get MitID as soon as you can.

You must keep your NemID

When you get MitID, you must keep your NemID until 31 October 2022. Until then, there may be situations where you will still need to use your NemID. You can also still get NemID if you need one.

You will be notified when MitID replaces NemID completely and you no longer need NemID.

How to create your MitID

Using NemID

You can create a MitID using your NemID on MitID.dk.

If you need help setting up your MitID, you can contact your bank or the MitID support by telephone 33 98 00 10.

If you have already talked to them but still need help, you can book an appointment with Citizen Service.

Using the MitID app

You can create your MitID using the MitID app if you meet two conditions:

  1. You have a valid Danish, Greenlandic or Faroese passport and
  2. You have a smartphone that can scan the chip in your passport.

Updating your personal information

Some people will receive a letter or Digital Post from Digitaliseringsstyrelsen (the Agency of Digitisation) that they need to update their personal information in their NemID, so they can later have a MitID.

If Digitaliseringsstyrelsen (the Agency of Digitisation) has not written to you, you do not need to do anything.

If you have received a letter from Digitaliseringsstyrelsen and you do not update your personal information, your NemID will still work as usual.

In the NemID code app, a message says that some users must update their personal information in NemID. You can ignore this message if Digitaliseringsstyrelsen has not written to you that you must update your personal information. Your NemID will also continue to work as usual should you have updated the information in the app, even if you have not been asked to do so.

How to update your personal information

If you have the NemID code app, you can update your personal information yourself. Find out how at the Danish Agency for Digitization's website (in Danish).

If you do not have the NemID code app, you can download it to your smartphone from App Store or Google Play.

Three ways you can use your MitID

MitID app

Download the app for your smartphone from App Store or Google Play. If your phone is too old to run the app, you can get a code display or a code reader.

MitID code display

The MitID code display is a small electronic device that displays a one-time passcode. Enter the one-time passcode when you log on to confirm your MitID.

You can order a code display at mitid.dk or pick one up at Citizen Service if you book an appointment.

MitID code reader

The code reader is intended for visually impaired people. It can read codes aloud to you and display codes on a large screen.

You can connect headphones to the code reader so that others cannot hear what is read aloud.

You do not need to provide any documentation that you are visually impaired to get a code reader.

Online banking problems

I missed the deadline for creating MitID

When you receive notice from your bank to create your MitID, you have 30 days to do so. If you are not able to create your MitID within the 30 days, you can try one of the following suggestions for getting online banking again:

I created MitID before my bank asked me to

If you created your MitID before your bank asked you to, you may not be able to log in to online banking using your MitID. This is because the bank has not yet matched your MitID with online banking.

Please contact your bank to get help.

If you have forgotten your user ID, you can find it by logging in to MitID using NemID.

Otherwise, you can get it by contacting MitID support at 33 98 00 10 or by booking an appointment with Citizen Service.

Changing your user ID

Activation code

You can get an activation code at MitID.dk or by booking an appointment with Citizen Service.

Forgot your PIN code

If you have forgotten your PIN code, you can contact MitID support on 33 98 00 10 or book an appointment with Citizen Service.

Changing your PIN code

You can change your PIN code when you are logged in to MitID.dk.

Reactivate a blocked MitID app

Your app will be blocked for one hour if you enter your PIN incorrectly three times. If you type incorrectly three more times, your app will be permanently blocked and you will need to create a new PIN code.

To create a new PIN code, contact MitID support at 33 98 00 10 or book an appointment with Citizen Service.

Pick up an ordered code display or code reader

Book an appointment with Citizen Service to pick up a code display or code reader that you have ordered at MitID.dk.

Activate a code display or code reader

You can activate your code display or code reader at MitID.dk.

If you need help activating your code display or code reader, you can book an appointment with Citizen Service.

Forgot your password

If you have the MitID app, you can log in to MitID.dk and choose a new password for the code display or code reader.

Otherwise, you can contact MitID support at 33 98 00 10 or book an appointment with Citizen Service.

Change your password

You can change your password when you are logged in to MitID.dk.

Reactivate a code display or code reader

Your code display or code reader will be temporarily blocked if you enter the one-time code incorrectly three times. If you type incorrectly three more times, it will be blocked permanently.

If you have typed incorrectly three times, you can reactivate it with an activation code, which you can get from MitID support at 33 98 00 10. Note: If your mobile phone number was registered or changed on MitID.dk in the last five days, the MitID support cannot provide an activation code. Instead you must book an appointment with Citizen Service and get an activation code from us.

If you have typed incorrectly six times, you cannot reactivate the code display or code reader. Instead, you can order a new one (see above how to do this).

Defective code display or code reader

If you have a defective code display or code reader, you can see on MitID.dk how to get a new one.

Prices for MitID code display and code reader

You can get up to three code displays and code readers for free. If you need more, the price is DKK 41.75 (2021) for a code display and DKK 294.08 (2021) for a code reader.

You cannot pay for code displays and readers at Citizen Service. Place your order and pay at MitID.dk, then pick up the code display or reader from Citizen Service. When placing your order, you also have the option to have the code display or reader sent by post.

MitID for 13 to 14 year olds

You can get a MitID from you are 13 years old. However, until you are 15 years old, it is up to the provider of the individual self-service solution to decide whether to let you use their solutions.

I would like to create a MitID for someone else

You cannot create a MitID on behalf of someone else. The person who wants MitID must book an appointment and show up in person at Citizen Service.

If the person cannot use MitID

If the person needs your help using self-service solutions, you can create a Digital Power of Attorney instead.

The person can also simply give you read access to their Digital Post by booking an appointment with Citizen Service to let you help them read their post.

If the person needs to log in to online banking, you can contact the bank to find a solution.
