MitID

MitID replaces NemID, and we recommend that you get MitID as soon as possible. You cannot use NemID for online banking after 31 October 2022, but you can still log in with NemID on all public self-service solutions until June 2023.

How to create your MitID

Using NemID

You can create a MitID using your NemID on MitID.dk.

If you need help setting up your MitID, you can contact your bank or the MitID support by telephone 33 98 00 10.

If you have already talked to them but still need help, you can book an appointment with Citizen Service.

Using the MitID app

You can create your MitID using the MitID app if you meet two conditions:

  1. You have a valid passport with a biometric symbol at the bottom of the cover (a gold colored square with a line through it and a circle inside) and
  2. You have a smartphone that can scan the chip in your passport.

Always bring

Either

  • a valid passport
  • a valid driving licence
  • a residence permit with social security number
  • The Ministry of Foreign Affairs' ID card issued in Denmark.

(If your passport or driving licence is not Danish, please bring your yellow health card as well.)

Or two pieces of these types of identification:

  • Personal data certificate (personattest)
  • Baptism/birth certificate
  • Health card
  • Residence certificate
  • Residence permit without social security number
  • Documentation for the payment of public benefits (must be no more than three months old)
  • Last year's annual statement
  • This year's advance statement
  • Identification card with photo issued by a municipality in Denmark or Greenland.

If you don't have ID

If you don't have ID and you are a Danish citizen, you can pick up a baptism certificate at a church office and then make an appointment to get a residence certificate at Borgerservice.

If you have lived in Denmark for less than two years

We always ask security questions when a resident requests a MitID. We do this to ensure that we are giving the MitID to the right person.

If you have only lived in Denmark for a short time, we may not have sufficient information about you in the CPR registry for the security questions. Therefore, we recommend that you bring a witness, a person who can testify that you are who you say you are, just in case.

The witness must be 18 or older, have a Danish CPR number, and must bring a valid picture ID of their own as well as their NemID or MitID. The witness' MitID must have been created at least 10 days in advance.

You can also bring a professional witness who knows you:

  • a social worker
  • a social mediator
  • an employee at the probation service
  • a job consultant
  • a 'gadeplansmedarbejder'
  • a police officer
  • an employee at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Denmark or
  • an employee at a foreign embassy in Denmark.

The professional witness must bring MitID, employee identification, the employers CVR number and one or two pieces of identification as described above.

Using your MitID

MitID app

Download the app for your smartphone from App Store or Google Play. If your phone is too old to run the app, you can get a code display or a code reader.

MitID code display

The MitID code display is a small electronic device that displays a one-time passcode. Enter the one-time passcode when you log on to confirm your MitID.

You can order a code display at mitid.dk or pick one up at Citizen Service if you book an appointment.

About online payments by card if you use a code display for MitID

When paying online by card, you may be asked to approve your payment with the so-called 3-D Secure. If you use a code display or code reader, unfortunately you cannot use MitID to pay by card online.

Payments are made via Nets, and they offer the opportunity to create a personal code, that you can use in combination with an SMS code to pay online.

If you have any questions, your bank can help you.

You can also use the MitID app if you need to pay by card online.

MitID code reader

The code reader is intended for visually impaired people. It can read codes aloud to you and display codes on a large screen.

You can connect headphones to the code reader so that others cannot hear what is read aloud.

You do not need to provide any documentation that you are visually impaired to get a code reader.

Order a code reader at mitid.dk or book an appointment to pick one up at Citizen Service.

About online payments by card if you use a code reader for MitID

Online banking problems

I missed the deadline for creating MitID

When you receive notice from your bank to create your MitID, you have 30 days to do so. If you are not able to create your MitID within the 30 days, you can try one of the following suggestions for getting online banking again:

I created MitID before my bank asked me to

If you created your MitID before your bank asked you to, you may not be able to log in to online banking using your MitID. This is because the bank has not yet matched your MitID with online banking.

Please contact your bank to get help.

You cannot create a MitID on behalf of someone else. The person who wants MitID must book an appointment and show up in person at Citizen Service.

More about MitID

Why is MitID replacing NemID?

Digital solutions are replaced by new ones over time for security reasons. MitID is using the latest standards for security to ensure that we are safe online.

If you have NemID and want to continue to be able to log in to online banking, you must get MitID no later than 31 October 2022. You can continue using NemID on all public self-service solutions until June 2023.

It is optional if you want MitID, just like NemID.

Can I get MitID?

You can have MitID if your identity can be established with certainty when you want to get one and if you are capable of handling the MitID on your own. You are not allowed to share your MitID with anyone else.

When should I get MitID?

We recommend that you get MitID as soon as you can. If you have NemID and still want to be able to log in to online banking, you must get MitID no later than 31 October 2022. You can continue using NemID on all public self-service solutions until June 2023.

You must keep your NemID

When you get MitID, you must keep your NemID until June 2023. Until then, there may be situations where you still need to use your NemID. You can also still get NemID if you need it.
