Using the MitID app
As a registered citizen with a CPR number, you can create your MitID using the MitID app if you meet two conditions:
- You have a valid biometric passport or a national ID card (EU/EEA countries only) with a small gold camera symbol, and
- You have a smartphone that can scan the chip in your passport/national ID card with a biometric symbol.
At Citizen Service (check the documentation you must provide)
You can book an appointment for the creation of MitID at the Citizen Service Centre, so we can help you.

Always bring the documentation in physical form
Either any one of the following:
- Passport (valid Danish, Greenlandic or Faroese), or
- Driving license (valid Danish or Greenlandic) - we accept a driver's license in the app
Other valid forms of identification include the residence permit with your Danish personal registration number (CPR number) or an ID-card from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued in Denmark.
Or any two of the following (in physical form):
- Passport (valid international or Danish without a complete Danish personal registration number)
- Certificate of personal data (Danish or Greenlandic)
- Baptism/birth certificate (Danish, Greenlandic or Faroese)
- Yellow health card
- Residence certificate (Danish, Greenlandic or Faroese)
- Residence permit without a Danish personal registration number (cpr number)
- ID-card with a picture (issued by a municipality in Denmark or Greenland)
- Documentation of public benefits payments (must be no more than three months old) *
- Annual tax assessment (last year’s) *
- Preliminary income assessment (this year’s) *
* Please note that documentation of public benefits payments, preliminary tax assessment, and annual tax assessment cannot be combined with each other. If you bring one of these three, you must also bring another form of identification from the list.
We ask security questions
When you visit Citizen Service we always ask security questions to ensure that you are the person you claim to be.
Missing valid identification?
If you were born in Denmark, you can:
Obtain a baptism or birth certificate by contacting any church office in the municipality. The certificate is free of charge.
Find church offices in Copenhagen (in Danish) (korttilkirken.dk)
If you have a Danish Personal Registration Number (cpr number), you can:
Obtain a residence certificate when you visit the Citizen Service Center to create a MitID. Please note, you must pay a fee for the residence certificate.
Get a residence certificate (book a time slot for the Citizen Service Center)
Have you lived in Denmark for under three years?
You must always bring identification (See which types of identification you need to bring).
You must also answer security questions when obtaining a MitID.
If you have only lived in Denmark for a short time, there might not be enough information about you in the CPR-register to generate the security questions. Therefore, we recommend that you bring an attesting witness (a person who can confirm your identity).
Requirements for an attesting witness
The witness must be at least 18 years old and bring:
- A valid photo ID (for example: a driving license or Danish passport)
- MitID (must have been created at least 30 days before)
If the witness does not have a Danish driver's license or Danish passport, they must bring a foreign passport/national ID card and a Danish health card.
Professional attesting witness
You may also bring a professional attesting witness with whom you have an established relationship. This can be a:
- Social advisor
- Social mediator
- Employment consultant
- 'Gadeplansmedarbejder'
- Police officer
- Employee at the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs
- Employee at a foreign embassy in Denmark
- Employee at the municipality’s Citizen Service
- HR employee at an RA (Registration Authority).
The professional attesting witness must bring:
- MitID
- Employee identification
- CVR number of their employer
- Their own personal identification.

About online payments by card if you use a code display for MitID
When paying online by card, you may be asked to approve your payment with the so-called 3-D Secure. If you use a code display or code reader, unfortunately you cannot use MitID to pay by card online.
Payments are made via Nets, and they offer the opportunity to create a personal code, that you can use in combination with an SMS code to pay online.

MitID code reader
The code reader is intended for visually impaired people. It can read codes aloud to you and display codes on a large screen.
You can connect headphones to the code reader so that others cannot hear what is read aloud.
You do not need to provide any documentation that you are visually impaired to get a code reader.
