Private childcare

You have 3 options for private childcare in Copenhagen if your address is registered in the city.

Private childcare by a childminder

– In Danish: Privat pasning

– From 0 to 6 years

In private childcare by a childminder, the childminder only looks after other people’s children. Your child can be cared for in your home, the childminder's home, or on business premises.

Price

The price is normally negotiated with the childminder. Part of the childminder's salary is subsidised by the city of Copenhagen.

Subsidy

If you choose childcare by a private childminder, you are not eligible for the income-based childcare subsidy. However, if you have two or more children in private childcare, you automatically qualify for a sibling allowance. The sibling allowance is calculated as 42.5% of the cheapest child care option.

Apply for private child care

Contact the private childminder directly to ask if they have an open spot and can accommodate your child.

Private childcare institutions

– In Danish: Private institutioner

– From 0 to 6 years

Private childcare institutions can be nurseries and kindergartens that are privately run. You will need to contact an institution directly to apply for a place.

Price

The cost of a childcare place in a private institution varies. The individual institutions set their own price and collect payment from parents directly.

Subsidy

You can apply for an income-based childcare subsidy. If you have more than one child, you are automatically entitled to a sibling discount. Contact the individual institutions to find out what they charge.

Waiting list

Private childcare institutions have their own waiting lists. You must contact a private childcare institution directly in order to have your child added to their waiting list. If you accept a place in a private institution, your child will be taken off the waiting list for a place in public childcare.
