What are my rights as a pregnant employee?

A pregnancy can in some cases give in extra sick days. But when you are pregnant, you are specially protected at your job.

During pregnancy (and during maternity leave) you are well protected against being fired. This also applies if you are adopting a child.

The reason for dismissal must be valid

If your employer wants to dismiss you, he/she has to prove that this has nothing to do with your pregnancy. If this is not possible, you are as an employee entitled to compensation.

The compensation will be between 6 and 12 months’ pay. Read more about your rights as a parent on www.lifeindenmark.dk

Maternity leave

You are also entitled to maternity leave before the birth. If you work in the public sector, your maternity leave starts 8 weeks before your due date. If you work in the private sector, your maternity leave will typically start 4-5 weeks before your due date.
