Termination of subsidy to private childminding

There is a 14 days mutual notice of termination in private childcare. You must cancel your contract with the childminder yourself and then complete a cancellation form to terminate the subsidy.

In addition to completing a termination form, you must terminate your contract with the private childminder in writing.

Please note that if the child is enrolled in a public childcare with less than 14 days of notice, the subsidy will be paid 14 days from the response to the offer - however max. 19 days from the offer date. This means that during a period of notice, you may have expenses for both the private childminder and a public childcare service.

Thus it is very important that you terminate the contract with the private childminder immediately after you have received a public childcare offer that you wish to accept.

Make sure to pay attention to the fact that some large private childcare schemes and private childminders have an additional contract, which can have financial consequences when the private childcare terminates.

Therefore, it is highly recommended that you familiarise yourself thoroughly with any supplementary contract. You must carefully consider whether you want to enter into an agreement on those terms, as it could mean that you receive a substantial double payment if you wish to terminate the contract.

Additional contracts may e.g. contain a notice of termination that is longer than 14 days, a very long commitment period and long holidays. The supplementary contract is exclusively a matter between parents and the childminder.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

Expand all

How do I calculate payment when termination does not occur at the end of a month?

You and the private childminder agree on how the calculation should take place.

Most people, however, would like to know how the City of Copenhagen calculates the size of the subsidy. Here, the subsidy is determined according to the number of calendar days in the month in question.

Example
The private childminder receives DKK 10,656 monthly and must now be paid for a period that runs from the 1st to the 20th of April, which has 30 calendar days. The private childminder is paid for 20 days and the calculation can then look like this: 10,656 / 30 x 20 = DKK 7,104 for payment to the private childminder.

When does the payment of subsidies end?

The payment of subsidies end in the following ways:

  • From the day your child is enrolled in day nursery, public childminding or kindergarten.
  • When you or your private childminder terminates the collaboration (with 14 days of notice). The termination must be in writing and signed.
  • If it can be documented that the contract is breached, you will need to contact your supervising educator.
  • If it turns out that your the private childcare is pro forma.
  • If the educational supervision assesses that your private childcare is no longer sound in terms of education or safety.
  • If you move from the City of Copenhagen, the subsidy ends no later than the date you leave the municipality.
  • If you no longer share address with the child.
  • No later than July 31th in the year in which your child will start kindergarten class.

Should I pay particular attention to a binding period?

Yes, it can have major financial consequences if you choose to terminate a contract before the binding period has expired.

Example
You have entered into a contract with a private childminder with a commitment period of 6 months. After 3 months, your child is offered a place in a nursery and you accept the place. From that day on, your child is enrolled in the daycare institution.

The City of Copenhagen will then end the subsidy for private childcare, as the municipality can only pay one subsidy per child.

From the registration date, you will therefore have to pay e.g. DKK 4,331 for the nursery and continue to have to pay the full payment to the private childminder e.g. DKK 11,682 (DKK 11,682 is made up of DKK 4,331 in co-payment and DKK 7,351 in lost municipal subsidy from private childcare).

You will therefore have an expense of DKK 16,013 per month for the 3 months when the child is enrolled in nursery school and you are also obliged to pay your private childminder due to the commitment period.
