Cost of childcare services

The cost of childcare depends on your child's age and the type of childcare you choose.

When your child starts in a municipal institution or daycare you will automatically receive a monthly bill. The payment is in advance.

If your child starts in private childcare you will receive subsidy every month in your Nemkonto. The subsidy will be paid out when a receipt of your monthly payments for the private childcare has been received by us. The subsidy is paid in arrears.

Please be aware of the important rules regarding free place subsidy. Read more in the questions and answers below.

If you have received a letter on recalculation of your free place subsidy, you can read more about this in the document at the bottom of this page. The document is in Danish.

Rules on free place subsidy

Rules on free place subsidy for day-, after school- and club offers

The municipality will be notified every month by SKAT if the income for you or your partner change. If the change has meaning for your free place subsidy, your parental payment will be regulated automatically for that month.

Recalculation

Your parental payment will be recalculated continuously both if your income raises or falls with at least five steps on the free place scale in relation to the income you have been granted a free place subsidy based on. The five steps correspond with a change in the income of kr. 1.537 per month.

If you have to pay more, you will receive a letter regarding the change, and you will have a chance to object before the change takes place. You will also receive a letter if you will be paying less. Some months will pass before the change in parental payment is regulated. For example, the subsidy for January will be regulated in April and the subsidy for February will be regulated in May. The change I the free place subsidy will be withdrawn or added to the following collection of parental payment.

If the income of you or your partner changes often, you may experience that your free place subsidy and the parental payment changes from month to month. This for example applies for,

  • Students with varying income
  • Those who receive unemployment benefits who changes between 4- and 5-weeks payments in a month
  • Salaried employees with subsidy, extra work or with special vacation compensation
  • Grant employees, hourly wage workers and substitute employees with varying income

Vacation compensation will from now on be calculated when they are taxed and not when they are paid.

If you have had your free place subsidy taken from you in three consecutive months because the family’s income is above the income limit for a free place, you must reapply for free place subsidy if one is needed.

A total recalculation

If there is a more permanent change to the family’s income you may send in a new digital application. We will then recalculate your free place subsidy if the change includes at least five steps on the free place subsidy scale.

Annual regulation

The new rules also mean that your free place subsidy will be after regulated once a year. The after regulation will happen based on the information provided by the income register and the annual tax return from SKAT.

The after regulation will also include the income changes, which have happened within the five steps in the continuous monthly recalculations.

If you and/or your partner is a freelancer, no automatic changes in the free place subsidy will happen throughout the year but only at the annual regulation.

There continues to be a duty to provide information to Forældrebetalingen if changes occur in the composition of the family.

You can read more about the rules for free place subsidy in executive order nr. 599 of April 30th 2015 (dagtilbud) as well as executive order nr. 1111 of September 17th 2015 (fritidshjem og klubtilbus). You will find them at www.retsinformation.dk

Is there a sibling discount?

Yes, if you have more than one child in daycare, nursery, kindergarten, after school clubs, private childcare or private daycare you will automatically receive a sibling subsidy. You pay full price for the most expensive place and half-price for the other places.

Rates in relation to shared custody

If you have shared custody of your children but do not live together, the children will be viewed as siblings at the parents where they are registered in Folkeregisteret (The National Registry).

It is therefore the Folkeregister address, which decides whether the children can receive a sibling discount whether or not the children spend an equal amount of time at each parent.

What does private childcare cost?

The price is not fixed by the municipality but is instead a negotiation with the private childminder. Most parents pay what amounts to the same as a nursery placement for fulltime childcare.

The private childminder’s salary is made up of both subsidies from the municipality and the parent’s own payment. The subsidy’s size depends on the weekly number of hours and the child’s age.

The subsidy is paid in arrears and will be paid to your Nemkonto on the last bank day of the month. The subsidy will be paid when we have received a receipt of your monthly payment. You and your child must have your address in the City of Copenhagen in order to receive subsidy.
