Waste management services for businesses

Find out more about the City of Copenhagen’s two waste management services for businesses. They will become effective on 1 July 2023.

The two services constitute the following:

  • A service for residual waste
  • A service for recyclable waste (food waste, paper, cardboard, glass, plastic, metal, food and beverage containers, hazardous waste, and textile waste). This service is also called waste designated for material utilisation.

In case you do not wish to use the municipal services

If you have received digital post from the City of Copenhagen concerning the two municipal waste management services for businesses and do not wish to make use of one or both services, you must deregister your business no later than 30 June 2023.

Which businesses are qualified for the new waste management services?

If your business is located on a property containing private residences (mixed residential and commercial properties), by default you qualify for the waste management services. The only requirement is that your recyclable waste corresponds to that of a private residence in terms of quantity and type. The following nine types of waste are suitable for material utilisation: food waste, paper, cardboard, glass, plastic, metal, food and beverage containers, hazardous waste and textile waste.

To which extent can businesses use the recyclable waste service?

As a business, you are only allowed to use the municipal waste management service for recyclable waste to the extent of that of a private residence. This means that the City of Copenhagen only offers to collect waste in the same container types and with the same frequency of emptying that it offers private residences.

If you have certain types of waste that exceed the quantity of a private residence, you must enter into an agreement with a private waste collector or use the recycling stations for certain types of waste, against payment.

What to do, if you received digital post about the new commercial waste management services?

If you received digital post from us, based on the information in CVR, we have assessed your business to be eligible for the municipal waste management services. However, please note that your business only qualifies for the services for recyclable waste to the degree of that of a private residence.

This is an offer, which you have the option to decline. You can do that by actively unsubscribing to one or both services. You must do this no later than 30 June 2023.

Unsubscribe to one or both services at Erhvervsportalen.

If you do not unsubscribe to both services, you will receive the first invoice during the autumn of 2023.

If you unsubscribe to the services, you must dispose of your own waste in a responsible manner, and you will not be permitted to use the municipal waste containers. You can do this by no later than 1 July 2023, entering into an agreement with a private waste collector, who will set up private containers for you and collect your waste. Against payment, you can use the recycling stations for some of the waste types mentioned. Please note that the municipality may demand that you provide documentation for your manner of waste disposal.

What to do, if you have not received digital post about the new waste management services, but wish to subscribe?

If you did not receive digital post from us, based on the information in CVR, we have assessed your business to not wish to or be eligible for using of the municipal waste management services for commercial waste. The reason may be that we, based on information about your business branch code or number of staff for example, have assessed your business to either generate too much waste or no waste at all.

If you wish to use the municipal services, you are welcome to contact us here.

Remember that, as a place of business, you are still obligated to sort all reusable waste from disposable waste.

What is the price for the new waste management services?

The City Council in the City of Copenhagen has decided on fixed market prices for 2023.

Are the new management services for commercial waste connected to the formerly mandatory commercial waste fee?

No, the two new management services for commercial waste have nothing to do with the formerly mandatory waste fee for businesses, which the City of Copenhagen charged businesses until 1 January 2019.
