Is my child entitled to healthcare?

Children as well as adults has the right to basic healthcare in Denmark.

Children are offered seven free special health examinations in the first 5 years. The first examination takes place when the baby is 5 weeks.

From here the child will be offered a study when it is:

  • 5 months
  • 12 months
  • 2 years
  • 3 years
  • 4 years
  • 5 years

It is up to you as a parent to contact your GP/doctor and make an appointment for the health examinations.


In addition all children can be vaccinated against a number of diseases. The vaccinations are free. It is your doctor who vaccinates your child. This may take place at the same time as your child receives a normal health examination.

The Danish health authorities decide which diseases your child can be vaccinated against.

These are:

  • Diphtheria (Di)
  • Tetanus (Te)
  • Whooping cough (Ki)
  • Polio (Pol)
  • Measles
  • Mumps
  • German measles (MFR) 
  • Meningitis (Hib)
