How do I borrow books at the library?

In order to borrow books at the library, you have go to a library to register yourself for free.

You register as a new borrower at your local library. Once you have registered as a borrower, you can borrow books at all libraries in Copenhagen.

If you need access to the library after the staffed opening hours, you need to register at the individual library.

Remember to bring:

  • Health Insurance Card (sundhedskort)
  • Picture ID

If you are younger than 18, a parent's or guardian's signature is required.


Conscripts and persons with temporary stay in Denmark must present either:

  • Passport
  • Driver's license
  • Diplomatic card
  • Military card, or
  • white card.

Special rules apply to enterprises and institutions. Ask at the library.

If you have not borrowed material from the library for two years, you will be deleted from the borrowers' register. This means that you will have to register again, if you want to borrow material again.

Notifications from the library

If you have stated your e-mail address and/or mobile phone number, the library will send you digital notifications. It is your responsibility to make sure that the e-mail address and/or mobile number are correct.

If your contact details change, please log on to your profile on the City of Copenhagen libraries' website to enter the new information.
