Are physical education classes mandatory in our municipal schools?

Physical education and exercise are mandatory in state schools (folkeskolen) in Denmark.

All children in folkeskolen have to have athletics lessons. With the school reform adopted in 2014, all children have to have more physical education lessons than before as it increases their concentration in the other lessons and is healthy for the children.

All children have to exercise for 45 minutes a day on average, as part of their school day. The exercise takes place in connection with physical education lessons and also as part of the daily education.

The child can of course be excused if the child is ill or if anything else prevents the child from participating in the physical education lessons.
