Married in Copenhagen

To apply for marriage in the Municipality of Copenhagen you must fill in an application.

You must fill in an application and submit it along with the required documents which are listed below.
Please note that you can expect a response time of three to four weeks.

DOCUMENTATION REQUIREMENTS

The following documents – if relevant to you – must be submitted together with the filled in notice of marriage form and a receipt for the payment of the examination fee, preferably attached to an e-mail as pdf files.

Please note that the relevant original documents must be presented by you personally at Copenhagen City Hall one working day before the scheduled wedding, at the latest. We will give specific information before your wedding.

Personal Identification

Copy of the picture page of your valid passport
Residence permit if you are not a Danish or EU-citizen but live in Denmark
Valid residence permit, visa, or proof of entry in Denmark or Schengen

Issued Personal Certificates

Certificate of marital status

The certificate of marital status must be less than four months old when we receive it, and state your:

  • Name
  • Date of birth
  • Place of birth
  • Current address
  • Citizenship
  • Marital status

Divorce Decree

If any of you are divorcees you must submit your latest issued divorce decree(s), fulfilling the following requirements:

Complete, dated and authorised divorce decree.

The document must be final and state that the divorce has not been, and cannot be, appealed to a higher court, meaning that the parties are free to remarry.

Please note that we require legalisation of divorce decrees issued in a number of countries. You will be contacted if necessary.

If issued in another language than English, German or Danish, the divorce decree(s) must be submitted in two versions: the original, and an authorised translation into either English, German or Danish.

Death Certificate of Former Spouse

Please note that we require legalisation of death certificates issued in a number of countries. You will be contacted if necessary.

If issued in another language than English, German or Danish, the divorce decree(s) must be submitted in two versions: the original, and an authorised translation into either English, German or Danish.

 

IF YOU LIVE IN A NORDIC COUNTRY

You must submit the following, if you are a citizen in one of the Nordic countries:

Sweden:

  • Hindersprövning
  • Personbevis for both parties
  • Intyg om vigsel

These documents are issued by Skatteverket, and must be no older than four months when we receive them.

Norway:

  • Prövningsattest
  • Copy of passport

These documents are issued by Folkeregisteret, and must be no older than four months when we receive them.

Iceland and Finland:

  • Prøvelsesattest
  • Copy of passport

Greenland:

Filled in notice of marriage form

Faroe Islands:

Filled in notice of marriage form
Copy of passport

PAYMENT DETAILS

Examination Fee

A proof of payment of the examination fee must be sent together with the application. The fee is DKK 500 (approximately € 70) (2015). This examination fee must only be paid if neither of you are registered in Denmark with an address.

Please Note

Wedding ceremonies are performed in English, German or Danish.
We cannot guarantee that you will get married on the date you initially wish for, so please do not book travelling tickets until your wedding date has been confirmed by the Wedding Office.
You can give us a prioritised list of possible dates for your wedding.
Copenhagen City Hall will provide two witnesses but you are welcome to bring your own. You do not have to inform us about this until immediately before the wedding ceremony.
